Polymers derived from monomer Schiff bases are generally synthesized by polycondensation reaction between diamine and a dialdehyde or diketone. The major handicap of Schiff base polymers (SBPs) is their inadequate solubility in most organic solvents because of the rigid chain structure of polymers. The insertion of flexible bonds between main chain aromatic rings is a kind of example to carry off the solubility limitation properties of SBP. In the present study I tried to emphasize the versatile and useful aspects of different kinds of ligands and their polymer compounds with their current interested properties and applications. Presenting good mechanical strength, well-chosen thermal stability, metal chelating ability, nonlinear optical, semi-conducting liquid crystal and fiber-forming properties are the particular classifications of the aromatic polyazomethines or Schiff base polymers. And also these kinds of compounds may lead to treat some medical disease with the effects of DNA cleavage.

The secondary Oil recovery process is related with the Hele-Shaw immiscible displacement. A middle-layer (M.L.) is considered between the displacing fluid (water) and oil, containing a polymer solute, where the viscosity is an unknown parameter. We minimize the Saffman-Taylor instability, searching for the optimal viscosity in M.L. which gives a minimal growth constant of perturbations. We solve this optimization problem by using the methods of functional and numerical analysis for the Sturm-Liouville problems which govern the flow stability in such three-layer Hele-Shaw cells.The obtained formulas for the optimal viscosities are giving an almost neutral stability and are in accord with previous experimental and numerical results. We study the variable permeability and diffusion effects. We compute the necessary polymer amount and M.L. length for a given minimization of the fingering phenomenon. Some surfactant effects on rising gas-bubbles in capillary tubes are also studied.

The motivation for this thesis was to find, by a literature review, determinants that could show if the concept mass customization can be used successfully to implement the individualized printed newspaper. With the individualized newspaper, newspaper companies can address developments in their business environment which have lead to a significant decline in their readership. The individualized newspaper is in a new approach which provides the opportunity for publishers to counter that decline, and potentially create new sources of income. It follows the slogan of editors in the 70s, "Give readers what they want" (Gladney, 1996). But in the 70s this was not possible due to a lack of visionary thinking and concepts, plus the unavailability of appropriate technology. It took almost three decades for the digital printing technologies and information and communication systems to reach a sufficient level of maturity to break through these barriers. Concurrent with the technological evolution the concept of "Mass Customization" was developed. This describes a method which enables companies to offer individual products or services to the masses. The subject of this thesis has been to investigate the opportunity of using the concept of "Mass Customization" to bring to fruition the individualized newspaper as a tangible product.
